Why the Jamaica Tallawahs Owner Moved to Antigua: Lack of Support

Posted by

Kris Persaud, the former owner of the Jamaica Tallawahs, has revealed that the lack of support from the Jamaican government led to his decision to relocate to Antigua. After relinquishing his franchise to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the Guyana-born businessman, now based in Florida, is set to launch a new team in Antigua, where cricket is deeply ingrained in the island’s culture.

Expressing his frustrations with the Jamaican government’s lack of financial backing despite the significant economic and social benefits generated by cricket events, Persaud, originally named Krishna Prasad, explained his rationale to Cricbuzz. He highlighted the absence of acknowledgment or appreciation, even after winning the 2022 tournament, as a contributing factor to his decision.

Having taken over the Tallawahs from Manish Patel in 2017, Persaud clarified that Patel played no role in his operations, emphasizing his 100 percent ownership of the new Antiguan team. Despite not finalizing the name for the Antigua franchise, Persaud expressed confidence in having local players and coaching staff, with bowling legend Curtly Ambrose serving as an assistant coach.

Persaud is actively involving the public in choosing the team’s name, with plans to decide early next year. He aims to integrate Antiguan legends as mentors, fostering grassroots cricket across the island. Addressing the closure of operations in Jamaica, the CPL explained that it became unsustainable for the Tallawahs, prompting them to sell the franchise back to the league. This move signifies a fresh start for Persaud in Antigua, where he anticipates a supportive environment for the growth of his new team.
